BA Methodist High School U18 edged Tonga High School 28–14 in an entertaining encounter at the Pacific Schools Rugby League Championship at Churchill Park yesterday.
Ba Methodist made a strong statement early, dominating the first half with structured attack and solid defence to take a commanding 20–4 lead into halftime.
The Ba side struck first through centre Ratu Osea Naula before Aporosa Ragata crossed for their second try. Isoa Nukunidreke added the third try as Ba Methodist controlled possession and territory.
Halfback Taniela Kunarara had a perfect first-half kicking display, landing three conversions and adding a penalty to extend the lead. Tonga High School managed only one first-half try through Aloha Tuakalau but failed to convert.
Trailing by 16 points at the break, Tonga High came out with increased intensity in the second half. Their pressure paid off when Soane Lehapoto scored their second try, with the conversion successfully added to reduce the deficit.
Despite sustained pressure from the Tongan side, Ba Methodist held firm in defence during key moments and capitalised on their chances late in the match.
Pio Tikicidre scored Ba’s fourth try in the final quarter, which was converted by Kunarara to further extend their lead.
Tonga continued to fight back and added a third try through Pinoni Tuitupou, though the conversion was unsuccessful. However, Ba Methodist sealed the match with another penalty from Kunarara in the dying minutes to secure a 28–14 victory.
In the girls’ match, Tonga Junior Girls defeated Ratu Latianara College 36–0.
Ba Methodist coach David Wise praised his team’s unity after the match, saying their strong bond played a key role in the win.
“It’s our team bonding that has kept us together,” he said.
