BA Rugby Union could become the first provincial union in Fiji to operate from a fully equipped clubhouse if plans discussed at its Annual General Meeting on Friday come to fruition.

The ambitious proposal forms part of the union’s three-year development plan, aimed at strengthening its operations both on and off the field. It is understood the Ba Town Council has granted the Ba Market Bure to the union on a 20-year lease, with the facility earmarked to be transformed into a modern clubhouse. The proposed development will include administrative offices, a gym and accommodation for players, particularly those travelling in from rural areas. Vinod Patel Park will remain the union’s main competition ground.

BRU secretary Gabby Kautoga told this newspaper the idea had received positive discussion during the AGM but still required formal approval from affiliated clubs. “We’ll need approval from our members on how we’re going to move on with our next project, which is the clubhouse,” Kautoga said.

“We’re looking at starting in the next few months. We have to have our clubhouse.” Kautoga confirmed a building had already been identified but said the union would wait for endorsement before proceeding.

“We’re thinking of that building, but we still need approval from our various clubs, and then we’ll move on with our project.”

He added funding remained a key component, with plans centred on renovating the structure and installing essential facilities.

“We’re thinking to renovate, have a gym, and also put in some accommodation for those coming from the interiors.”

While the total cost is yet to be determined, Kautoga said details would be finalised once approval is secured.

If realised, the project is expected to significantly boost Ba Rugby’s development pathways and provide a central hub for players and administrators over the next three years.
