A PROBE is in progress to ascertain the source of an oil spill in Suva Harbour yesterday.

Swift action by pollution officers from the Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF) and Fiji Ports Corporation Ltd (FPCL) resulted in the tier 1 spill being contained.

In a statement, MSAF said the spill happened at Narain Jetty.

“As of yesterday afternoon, oil spill booms were deployed and has been effective in containing the spill from spreading to other areas of the jetty,” said MSAF.

“Preliminary investigations are currently underway to determine the cause of the spill, and necessary actions will be taken against the responsible individual or company.

“The Department of Environment and Water Police have been informed in regards to the incident and are assisting MSAF and FPCL with this investigation.”

A tier 1 oil spill is generally small in size and affects only the local area.
