Update: 4:02PM YAT-Sen Primary School (YPS) recorded their first gold medal win this afternoon after Saimoni Loga won the Under-9 Boys Long Jump event.
Loga jumped the winning distance of 3.36m narrowly out jumping his Tacirua Primary opponent Soloveni by 0.35m (3.01m).
Loga’s gold was the first for his school in the Suva Zone 2 Athletics Competition.
According to his coach Meli Yabakivou, Loga was initially brought in to compete as a sprinter but since they did not have a specialised jumper, he (Loga) volunteered to represent the school in the long-jump.
“We didn’t have a long-jumper so we trained and taught him a few techniques for long jump yesterday (Tuesday) and it has come as a surprise to us that he has won it,” Yabakivou said.
He said class 4 student Loga would also be competing in the 50m and 75m sprints later in the day.
