FIJI Water Flying Fijians head coach Senirusi Seruvakula has moved to reassure supporters that the national side remains united despite a difficult start to its Rugby Nations Championship campaign.
With Fiji coming off heavy defeats in its opening two matches, Seruvakula said there was no divide between the coaching staff and players, insisting the squad had grown closer during the week.
“The relationship is really tight,” he said.
“We are really connected with the players. We had a good week this week on Monday and yesterday. Our connections with all the staff and all the players and myself as the head coach, we are really tight. We are really tight together as a team.”
Seruvakula said rebuilding confidence had been the team’s priority ahead of Saturday’s clash against Scotland.
“The theme of the week is that we have to be connected,” he said.
“Connected very strong. Everyone was down on the last weekend. We forget about last week’s game but take the learnings and work hard for this week.”
The head coach said Fiji’s focus must now shift to improving the areas that have proved costly against Tier One opposition.
“We just have to be focused when we go to these big matches,” he said.
“We need to win our set pieces and maintain discipline for the full 80 minutes. We can’t deserve to be giving yellow card and red card and it will cost us in this Tier One competition.”
While acknowledging the challenge of playing away from home, Seruvakula said the players understood what was required.
“The competition is tough, it is not easy,” he said.
His message was clear. The Flying Fijians have put last week’s disappointment behind them, remained united as a group, and are determined to produce a performance that restores belief when they face Scotland.
The Flying Fijians will take on Scotland this Sunday, July 19 at 6.10 am at the Scottish Gas Murrayfield stadium in Edinburgh.
