As the nine registered political parties tune up the tempo of their preparations for the much-anticipated 2022 General Election, a national civil society organisation is keeping watch of how ideas and programs promised to help people are being proposed in party manifestos and campaigns.

With particular reference to poverty, the Fiji Council of Social Services believes this issue must be placed at the heart of all election campaigns geared towards the December 14 national event.

FCOSS executive director Vani Catanasiga believes poverty is a critical issue in Fiji.

While speaking on The Lens @ 177 – an original The Fiji Times production – she said political parties aspiring for leadership in the 2022 General Election should consider addressing this issue in totality in their party manifestos.

“When you’re talking about poverty during national elections, it’s really about the kinds of governance that an aspiring political party that’s aspiring for leadership should be placing at the centre of their campaigns,” Ms Catanasiga said.
