Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese will visit Fiji on Monday to reaffirm Australia’s commitment to the Pacific, with talks expected to focus on strengthening the Fiji–Australia Vuvale Partnership, regional security and greater cooperation.

Albanese will travel to Suva and Honiara from 5 to 7 July, accompanied by Australia’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Penny Wong.

During his visit to Fiji, Albanese will meet Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka to discuss expanding bilateral cooperation under the Vuvale Partnership.

Australia said the visit reflects the close relationship between the two countries and their shared vision for a peaceful, secure and prosperous Pacific.

“Fiji and Solomon Islands are not just our neighbours, we are part of the Pacific family, and we work together for the good of our region,” Albanese said.

He said he looked forward to meeting Rabuka to further strengthen ties.

“I look forward to meeting with my friend Prime Minister Rabuka to uplift the Vuvale Partnership, create opportunities for young people and celebrate the bond between our countries.”

Following his Fiji visit, Albanese will travel to the Solomon Islands to meet Prime Minister Matthew Wale, continue discussions on a proposed comprehensive bilateral treaty and participate in the country’s Independence Day celebrations.

Albanese said Australia remained committed to being a dependable regional partner.

“Australia remains a partner that the Pacific can rely on. By working together we can foster a safe and resilient region that enables all of our economies to grow and prosper.”

Foreign Minister Penny Wong said the Albanese Government remained focused on strengthening relationships across the Pacific.

“The Albanese Government is working hard to make transformational breakthroughs in the Pacific and shape a peaceful, stable and prosperous region.”

She said Australia would continue engaging with Pacific nations by “listening, respecting and acting on Pacific priorities in the Pacific way.”

Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles will serve as Acting Prime Minister while Albanese is overseas.
