FIJI’S largest solar farm power system is set to be constructed at Bonunaqwele in Nadi, marking a historic milestone for Fiji Airports in advancing its sustainability agenda. Officiating at the groundbreaking ceremony Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation Viliame Gavoka emphasised that the Nadi International Airport 3.25-megawatt solar farm is an investment in Fiji’s future.

“This is far more than the commencement of a renewable energy project,” he said.

“It is an investment in resilience. It is an investment in energy security.

“And it is an investment in the long-term sustainability of one of Fiji’s most important national assets.”

He said the project aligns with the Government’s national development aspirations under Vision 2050 and reflects their commitment to building a more sustainable, resilient and globally competitive Fiji.

“Nadi International Airport is Fiji’s principal gateway to the world.

“It is where millions of visitors begin their experience of our country.

“It is a vital link connecting Fiji to international markets, supporting tourism, facilitating trade and investment, and enabling the movement of people across our region and beyond.

“As our aviation sector continues to grow, so too does the responsibility to ensure that the infrastructure supporting it remains reliable, efficient and future-ready.

“This project is an important step in that direction.”

Mr Gavoka said the first phase of the solar farm would provide a significant source of renewable energy to support airport operations while reducing reliance on traditional energy sources.

“It will lower operating costs, strengthen energy resilience, and reduce Fiji Airports’ carbon footprint.

“This milestone also builds on Fiji Airports’ growing record of environmental leadership.”

Fiji Airports chief executive officer Mesake Nawari said Fiji Airports had made significant progress in advancing its sustainability agenda.

“Earlier this year, Nadi International Airport received the 2026 Green Airports Recognition Platinum Award at the Airport Council International (ACI) meeting in Bangkok, recognising our efforts in environmental stewardship and climate action,” he said.

“This achievement builds on our Airport Carbon Accreditation Level 4 certification and reflects our ongoing commitment to responsible airport operations and environmental sustainability.”

The solar farm is expected to be completed in the next 18 months.
