The Fijian agricultural sector kept the momentum going when all others sectors started to close down during the COVID-19 crisis.

Agriculture Minister Dr Mahendra Reddy noted this while signing the grant contract for the people of Sabeto and their chief in Nadi yesterday.

“When all other sectors started to close down –– the business sector, the tourism sector –– it was only the agricultural sector that continued and in fact, the momentum of agricultural production increased. It was agriculture that kept the economy at that time going.

“It was agriculture that gave hope to a lot of households that they can survive and pass through this particular crisis. It was agriculture that brought hope to a lot of households who lost their jobs as a result of the pandemic.”

Dr Reddy said the global COVID-19 pandemic allowed the urban Fijian population to be engaged in agriculture in a big way, something that had never happened before.

He also urged the people of Sabeto to take advantage of the strategic advantage in Fiji’s agricultural sector and explore it.
