In a step towards elevating Fiji Rugby’s bilateral collaboration through sports, the Fiji Rakavi Football Union Ltd (FRFUL) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Qatar Rugby Federation recently.

The agreement between the two sporting nations had come into effect on Wedensday, June 11, 2025, and runs for three years with the option of an extension.

Fiji Rugby Union chairman, John Sanday, welcomed the agreement with their Qatari counterparts.

“Partnering with Qatar opens new avenues for our players and coaches. We are excited about potential training camps, friendly matches and shared commercial opportunities that will benefit rugby in Fiji,” Sanday said.

The agreement has been hailed as a milestone in the FRU’s strategy to forge international alliances, following recent partnerships with other global rugby entities.

The MOU signed by both parties sees them come into agreement on having exchange delegations, including coaches, referees, medical experts and performance analysts.

Another area agreed on in the MOU is the organisation of international friendly matches and training camps for men’s and women’s teams across all age groups.

The other two points agreed on included a collaboration on sports science, medicine and referee development programs as well as the exploration of joint commercial ventures, including rugby infrastructure projects.

Fiji Rugby announced the formation of a joint committee to oversee the MOU’s implementation, with the finalisation of an annual program each September.

Sanday, in acknowledging the signing of the MOU, thanked the Fiji Embassy Office and the Official Committee for Rugby and Hockey of Qatar.
