THE McDonald’s Fijian Drua Women head coach Mike Legge believes hosting the Super Rugby Women’s grand final in Fiji for the first time is a landmark achievement that extends far beyond his team.
Speaking ahead of Saturday’s title decider against the NSW Waratahs, Legge described the occasion as a defining moment for women’s rugby in the country.
“It’s massive. Massive not just for the team, obviously massive for the country being a first time, but it’s just huge for women’s rugby in Fiji to be able to deliver something like this,” Legge said. “It’s a proud day for women’s sport in Fiji.”
The Drua earned hosting rights after defeating the Queensland Reds 31-5 in the home semi-final, setting up a third grand final meeting with the defending champions. Legge credited the players’ commitment throughout the season for putting the team in a position to create history.
“The girls have worked really hard. As I’ve said in the past, the girls work extremely hard. They deserve to be here in the final.”
He also highlighted the culture created within the squad as one of the biggest reasons behind their successful campaign. “I think one of the biggest keys to the success is just enjoying each other’s company, making sure the environment has been one of hard work but also a light and fun environment.
“I think with most teams, if the environment’s good, you’re going to get success.”
The Drua will now look to cap off their historic season by lifting the championship.
