A chance for exposure

In the next few months, athletes will have the opportunity to impress national coaches and compete at Oceania Athletics Championship in June.

Athletics Fiji head coach Albert Miller senior said the Oceania Championship was an ideal platform for local athletes to get some exposure against overseas opponents.

He said they would be on the lookout for more potential and monitor top performing athletes.

“We are monitoring the results of weekly competitions if there are weekly comps. Our first trial is in Easter, we are looking at one in May and we are also using the Fiji Finals,” he said.

A huge Team Fiji contingent is expected to grace the new HFC Bank Stadium tracks competing against athletes from rivals Australia and New Zealand.

“We are not really stipulating for athletes to run this time or jumpers to a certain distance as well as throwers, we are keeping an open mind just so more athletes can get the opportunity.

“For us it’s huge, it’s a wonderful opportunity because the last time we had anything going was back in 2017. Now we are looking at more than a couple of hundred athletes because we’ve got the open, under-18 and U16, so easily we can get a hundred athletes in each category and that’s about 300 athletes.

“It is also a wonderful opportunity for our athletes and what better place to compete than at home.”

Some athletes will also be using the competition to gain point, improve their ranking and potentially get a spot at the Olympic Games in France.
