LELEAN Memorial School (LMS) is poised to reclaim its position at the forefront of Fiji’s school sports, beginning with a strong showing at their recent interhouse athletics competition.
Once a powerhouse in rugby, volleyball, and athletics during the 1990s and early 2000s, the school is now focused on reviving its proud winning tradition.
The passion and dedication displayed during the interhouse competition, held at the HFC Bank National Stadium, mark the beginning of a new sporting era for LMS.
Assistant Principal Ulaisai Vakatawakoula highlighted the significance of the interhouse event in identifying and nurturing student talent.
“This competition helps us see what our students can do,” he said. “We want to get our athletes, especially our girls, ready to compete at the Triple N Zone and then at the Coca-Cola Games.”
Last year, Lelean celebrated two silver medalists at the Coca-Cola Games, underscoring the strength of their athletics program.
This year, the school is prioritizing quality over quantity by selecting a smaller, elite team of athletes.
They are also engaging specialist coaches, many of whom are former Lelean students, to provide expert training.
“The competition is really tough, so we need to focus on the best athletes and give them the best coaching,” Vakatawakoula added.
“Our old scholars have been a big help in supporting the team.”
Lelean’s rich sporting history includes numerous championships across various sports. The school is confident that its new strategic approach will revive the winning spirit.
Using the interhouse meet as a stepping stone, Lelean is now preparing for the greater challenge of the Triple N Zone, aiming to ensure their athletes not only compete but also bring home medals.
