Unplanned water cuts

THE disruptions in water supply in the Upper Tovata System, from Khalsa Rd junction to Colo-i-Suva, has had residents fuming.

While water was restored yesterday, the residents complained that the unplanned water cuts, the lack of notification and safety risks associated with makeshift solutions have been an ongoing problem.

Earlier this week Piniana Seseacagi, 58, expressed her frustration at the ongoing water cuts that have seriously disrupted her daily schedules.

“These water trucks stop at the main road and don’t come into the settlement when they know very well many elderly people live here,” Ms Seseacagi said.

“So, early in the morning, I have to walk to the main road and carry those heavy buckets of water back to my house.”

She said the residents weren’t told about the recent water cuts and that they did not have time to store water for emergencies.

“These water cuts last days, even weeks, or like in a day, our water would be cut from 8am to late in the afternoon.”

According to the residents, the issue has been ongoing, lasting for at least a decade in the Tacirua settlement.

In response, the Water Authority of Fiji issued a statement yesterday confirming they were aware of the disruption and their commitment to resolving the issue promptly.

“WAF acknowledges receiving complaints from residents and wishes to advise that disruption notices were communicated to customers in the affected areas through the WAF mobile app and text blasts,” said the authority statement.

“We sincerely apologise that the notification did not reach all customers affected and recognise the importance of keeping our customers informed during instances of service interruptions.”

The authority said restoration works were in progress, with water supply being progressively restored to affected areas.

WAF urged residents to stay informed and seek updates and assistance through their customer care lines, including 5777, 1507, and 1508.
