Swire Shipping Fijian Drua head coach Mick Byrne is committed to nurturing both junior and senior players to become exemplary future leaders within the team.

During their match against the Waratahs last Saturday, the Drua side experienced a drop in momentum in the second half, particularly after the substitution of senior players such as Frank Lomani.

“Whether it’s leadership or discipline, but it is certain we are a young team.

“And we’ve got our young leaders and we’re growing, we’re trying to grow our leaders,” Byrne said.

He talked about the challenges of developing leaders within a team.

“You know, we’re in our third year in a new established program, the younger ages don’t come through four or five years of Super Rugby, so it’s a very young leadership group and we’ve got to be careful that we don’t clutter our players’ minds through leadership roles.”

Byrne acknowledged the need for other players to step up in leadership roles given the team’s overall lack of experience.

“We try to grow them. Mercy is there for us on the field as well and when you look across the line, we’re an inexperienced team and maybe there is an element that other players need to step up in those areas,” Byrne said.
