Last Sunday marked the glorious entry of Jesus Christ into Jerusalem which is known as Palm Sunday in the Christian calendar.

It is that time of the year where children around the country re-enact Jesus Christ’s triumphant entry as described in the bible leading up to the Holy Week.

To remember the special Sunday, the Education Minister, Viliame Gavoka, along with the Education Assistant Minister, Iliesa Vanawalu, and permanent secretary Selina Kuruleca wished all the children of Fiji a happy Palm Sunday.

“Today Christians around the world are celebrating Jesus’ triumph entry into Jerusalem,” Mr Gavoka said in a statement.

“It marks the beginning of the Holy Week, leading up to Resurrection Sunday.”

He said the message for Palm Sunday was that God loved children the most and in the Christian calendar a special day was set aside where children, in unison, shouted Hosanna to the King of Kings.

“As the children surrendered to Jesus in the temple, He proclaimed that the Kingdom of God belonged to the children and those who have the purest of hearts like them.”

Ms Kuruleca stated that the day reminded people of Jesus’s humility and his willingness to fulfill God’s plan which showed that true greatness lies in serving others with love and respect.

“As we commemorate Palm Sunday, we must teach our children about the significant teachings of Jesus and we all should renew our commitment to follow him and embrace his character of compassion and forgiveness and above all, love and these should be reflected in our daily actions,” she said.

Assistant Minister Iliesa Vanawalu also shared his message about Palm Sunday.

“Palm Sunday reminds us that every child has potential,” Mr Vanawalu said.

“We need to never cease to guide and encourage the little ones in our lives.

As we celebrate this day, let us also remember our responsibility to create an environment that fosters growth and happiness for every child.

Let the blessings of Hosanna to the Most High be a source of strength to our children of Fiji.”

On Palm Sunday children wear white to signify rejoicing and the purity of souls.
