Muaira District School in the interior of Naitasiri serves four villages — Botenaulu, Matainasau, Lutu and Waibasaga.
This month the school, according to a Government statement had its prefect induction ceremony and the Education’s Assistant Minister, Iliesa Vanawalu was the chief guest.
Doing the honours of badging the students during the investiture were the parents, guardians and Mr Vanawalu.
During his address to the students, Mr Vanawalu applauded the school’s 90 per cent pass rate in the Eighth Year Examination and urged the prefects to lead by example — emphasising the importance of being “first in everything”.
He also took the time to highlight some of Government’s initiatives that will ensure quality education for all, including the free education grant and provision of essential education supplies.
He ended his address by extending a hearty congratulations to the prefects and wished students a successful academic year.
Muaira District School was damaged by Tropical Cyclone Winston in 2016.
In 2021 the school had a new building constructed to cater for Year 3 to Year 8 students.
The $1.5 million project also included a computer lab, a head teacher’s office and a staff room.
