Fiji deaf women’s 7s side wins gold

The Fiji Deaf Women’s Rugby 7s team emerged victorious against the New South Wales Barbarians at the 2024 Australian Deaf Games in Newcastle, Australia to secure the gold medal at the competition.

The team created history with its first-ever gold medal win at the Australian Deaf Games.

The Ministry of Youth and Sports in a statement highlighted that in a exhilarating display of skills and determination the team won both their games against the Barbarians.

With a final score of 9-4, the team according to the Ministry showcased their dominance on the field.

The outstanding performance of Fiji’s Ethen Shute did not go unnoticed.

Shute was named the best player of the Australian Deaf Games in the Women’s Rugby 7s competition.

Her exceptional skills and contribution to the team undoubtedly played a significant role in the team’s successful win.

The Ministry highlighted that the team’s dedication, perseverance and unwavering spirit has brought immense pride to the nation and serves as an inspiration to aspiring athletes across the country.

Youth and Sports Minister, Jese Saukuru commended the team for their exceptional teamwork discipline and commitment to the sport.

He emphasised the importance of inclusivity and equal opportunity for all individuals, regardless of their abilities and applauded the Fiji Deaf Women’s 7s team for breaking barriers and showcasing their immense talent on the international stage.

The coaching staff, support personnel and all those who have contributed to the success of the Fiji Deaf Women’s 7s rugby team were commended for their dedication and sacrifices for the team too.

The Minister highlighted that their guidance, expertise and unwavering support had undoubtedly played a crucial role in the team’s achievement.

He wished the team well with continued success in their future endeavours and assured them of Government’s support and commitment to promoting inclusivity and providing equal opportunities for all athletes in Fiji.

The men’s 7s team also won gold at the competition.
