Bainimarama elected FRU president

PRIME Minister Rear Admiral (Ret) Voreqe Bainimarama is the new president of the Fiji Rugby Union.

He was elected unopposed at the Fiji Rugby Union annual general meeting in Nadi yesterday.

The media was not allowed during the meeting.

FRU chairman Filimone Waqabaca said the meeting was exclusive to the council.

“Some sensitive issues were discussed at the meeting,” he said.

“The meeting is exclusive to the council. The appointment of the president went through the normal process. Only one name was proposed and Prime Minister Bainimarama is the new president.”

Rear Admiral (Ret) Bainimarama replaces the late Ratu Isikeli Tasere who passed away last December.

Ratu Tasere took over as president in 2011. He played as a prop for Nadroga and earned 13 Test caps for Fiji.
