After last year’s COVID-19 lockdown, 65-year-old Miliakere Tinai turned to her market-vending business which is set up along the Kings highway in Lovu, Lautoka. Now, more than a year later, Mrs Tinai sits at her makeshift stall selling masks to earn money for her family.

“My husband is disabled,” she said. “My two children were working in Suva, but then the lockdown happened and they couldn’t work.

“So they call almost every day saying that they can’t support us so I’m doing what I can for me and my husband.”

He said she spent each day at the market selling masks, coconuts and bananas with other Lovu HART residents. “We share the stall and every day, we try to help each other make a sale.”

She said she wished to see her children on Mother’s Day, but the restrictions on movement meant she would be celebrating the special day on her own.

“It will be my husband and I this Mother’s Day. “They will call me and wish me a happy Mother’s Day and for that, I am grateful.

“Even though it has been hard, I thank God that I am still able to do something to help me and my husband.”
