The United Kingdom is committed to working with large Ocean States and other partners in the Pacific to secure an ambitious outcome from COP26, says British High Commissioner to Fiji George Edgar.
Speaking in regards to the buildup of the 26th Conference of Parties, Mr Edgar said Pacific Island nations were in the frontline of the climate emergency and were a strong moral voice in making the case for more intensive global action.
“Secured outcome from COP26 will support the economic and security needs of highly vulnerable countries,” he said.
“I look forward to working with Pacific Island Nations and regional organisations ahead of December’s virtual summit, which will be a key moment in our campaign to drive climate ambition.”
Meanwhile, the UK Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, said the UK would lead by example, keeping the environment on the global agenda and serving as a launch pad for a global green industrial revolution.
“As the world continues to deal with coronavirus we must look ahead to how we will rebuild, and how we can seize the opportunity to build back better,” Mr Johnson said.
COP26 will be hosted by the UK in November, 2021.
