Should Fiji record another positive COVID-19 case, the Government might have to consider resuming classes for Year 12 and Year 13 students only on June 30.

Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama revealed this during a talanoa session in Nadala, Nadarivatu yesterday.

A lady had asked the PM during the talanoa session if schools would open on June 30.

Mr Bainimarama said New Zealand had declared itself COVID-19 free a few days ago, however, he received news that two new cases were recorded yet again.

Mr Bainimarama informed more than 300 villagers that there was a need to ensure the country was totally COVID-19 free before restrictions were lifted and everything returned to normalcy.

He said younger schoolchildren were at risk in such health situations and this was why it was vital to focus on the senior classes.

Mr Bainimarama said there would be another meeting with health officials this weekend to discuss the country’s COVID-19 status.

He said this meeting would then determine which restrictions would be lifted and those that would stay for the safety of Fijian citizens.

Mr Bainimarama said it was vital for the country to ensure it was totally safe before all restrictions on the deadly sickness were lifted.

He said health officials continued to dedicate their time to the COVID-19 issue.
