TEAM Fiji is hoping to take a team of about 50 athletes, officials and staff to the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games should all 8 sports qualify to Japan in July.

Fiji chef de mission Patrick Bower said the eight sports needed to succeed in their qualifying international competitions in order to make it to the contingent.

“We hope that all sports who are currently going on their qualifiers actually do qualify so we may have a good number of Fiji representatives from Fiji,” said Bower.

The sports that are trying to get through the Olympic Games qualification process are archery, boxing, judo, karate and table tennis.

Athletics and swimming have qualified through universalities and will be taking one athlete and two swimmers.

The sevens rugby women’s and men’s team have qualified through the HSBC Sevens Series and the Oceania Rugby tournament.

“We are coming very close to finalising the teams although there are some still going overseas to try and qualify and we do hope we will be able to name the teams by July as Team Fiji is expected to be leaving on July 17,” said Bower.
