CCTV helps reduce crime

THE installation of security cameras in Labasa Town has reduced crime in surrounding areas, says divisional police commander Northern Senior Superintendent of Police Verani Nakauyaca.

SSP Nakauyaca said the CCTV cameras helped police detect and investigate crimes.

“Last month a total of three thefts and two burglaries were captured on the surveillance CCTV cameras,” he said.

“This was a great initiative by Duavata Crime Prevention Carnival committee and it has really helped our work.

“We thank them for helping prevent crime in the North especially in Labasa.

“We have noticed a decrease in crime rate compared with the same period last year and we know that members of the public are aware of the cameras installed in town.”

SSP Nakauyaca said the cameras provided a 24-hour security surveillance, especially during sporting events that often attract large crowd.

Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro said police were still compiling the crime stats for the North.
