PRIME Minister Voreqe Bainimarama says the Fijian Government is willing to employ foreign labourers as canecutters on sugarcane farms because there are no locals available to do the job.
The clarification was made by Mr Bainimarama while responding to a question posed by Tokatoka district representative Rusi Korovusere during a talanoa session at Nauluvatu Village, Nakelo in Tailevu yesterday.
Mr Korovusere asked the PM to explain why foreign labourers were being brought in when there were unemployed youths in villages.
Speaking in the iTaukei language, the district representative said men from the province had already done the job before and had received good money from it.
Mr Bainimarama said government started recruiting from abroad because district representatives never informed him that youths were available to do the job.
