A TOTAL of 98 licences for private vehicles were cancelled by the Land Transport Authority (LTA) in the last eight months for road traffic violations and unsafe driving behaviour.

There were four driver licences suspended and 18 counselled for the same reason.

While highlighting this, LTA chief executive officer Irimaia Rokosawa said 921 warning letters were issued to drivers over the counter.

“Of these 465, warning letters were issued in the Central-Eastern Division, 384 in the West and 72 in the North,” he said.

In determining the cancellation of a driver’s licence, Mr Rokosawa said considerations included the number of traffic infringement notices issued as well as their demonstrated improvement and efforts to refrain from committing traffic offences.

“Show cause hearings are not isolated to Labasa only, the hearings are conducted in all the regions in Fiji” he said.

The decision to cancel licences stems from a commitment to address reckless driving habits and the disregard for road traffic laws, which pose a significant risk to public safety.”

Mr Rokosawa said their stance remained firm, which was why they could not compromise or risk further loss of lives because of such behaviour.
