Fiji currently has 6887 foreigners from 101 countries working in Fiji.
Prime Minister Frank Bainimarama revealed this last week in response to a written question that was filed in Parliament on March 25. From 2013 to 2019, an average of 4230 work permits were issued annually for skilled workers.
He said these foreigners had permits to work in the building and civil industries, wholesale and retail, fishing, religious, civil societies, education, manufacturing, hotel and catering, communication, ICT and tourism.
He said the Immigration Department issued eight types of permits.
“Entry of skilled foreign workers are facilitated through ‘work permits’ which are issued in accordance with conditions and criteria under the Immigration Act 2003 and Regulation 2007,” he said. “It should be noted that skilled workers contribute significantly to Fiji’s economy.
“The filling of temporary skill gaps is essential for Fiji’s short to mediumterm economic recovery and long-term economic growth.”
