The Suva Orchids and Horticulture Circle staged its 60th horticulture exhibition at the Wesley Church hall in Suva.
Organiser Akosita Raicebe said the club, which consists of 65 members, was initially established by Europeans.
“They wanted to see that floral art was being taught,” she said.
“And they extended membership to the wider community.
“The circle targeted visitors from abroad, like when the royal family would visit our shores or when we had VIP guests visiting.”
Ms Raicebe said some of their members had businesses of their own.
“We have members who are florists, while some have flowers and plants which they grow in their nurseries.
“We have contributed quite well to the community. Some of our members have gone out to be tutors in institutions while others have learned from here and have been employed by the tourism industry in hotels, decorating rooms and even with landscaping and flower arrangements.”
The 64-year-old urged members of the public to turn up for the tutoring sessions.
“I think we have opened up this two-day show and people can come along and view what we have on display.”
The organisers are encouraging people to attend the exhibition because they will be having free tutoring from midday to 1pm today
“This is one way we can share our knowledge with the public.”
