MORE than 4100 seismic events were recorded and analysed in Fiji during the 2025–2026 financial year, highlighting the country’s highly active tectonic environment.

The figures were revealed in a written response tabled in Parliament following a question from MP Alipate Tuicolo to the Minister for Lands and Mineral Resources on Fiji’s seismic activity and investment in earthquake monitoring.

According to the response, the Mineral Resources Department recorded 4116 seismic events, comprising 3400 local events, or 83 per cent, and 716 regional occurrences, representing 17 per cent.

“Enhanced by strategic government funding, an expanded network of seismic stations now delivers superior national coverage,” Minister for Lands and Mineral Resources Filimone Vosarogo said.

He said the infrastructure enabled teams to track earthquake locations, magnitudes and depths “with unprecedented precision”.

The Government invested approximately $600,000 in purchasing and upgrading seismic stations, which it says has strengthened Fiji’s ability to detect and assess earthquakes more quickly and accurately.

“This supports faster and more reliable information for emergency authorities and communities, moreover, improves Fiji’s capacity to assess potential tsunami threats,” the response stated.
