The Government will invest more than $3.6million to upgrade staff quarters on Kadavu and the Central and Western divisions, aimed at improving living conditions for officers serving in rural and maritime areas.
Responding to the 2026-2027 National Budget in Parliament last week, Minister for Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Risk Management Mosese Bulitavu said the investment would support the refurbishment and maintenance of government residences.
“I commend the Government for its continued investment in the upgrade and enhancement of Government staff quarters, with $1.687million allocated for the refurbishment of staff quarters at the Vunisea Government Station in Kadavu and a further $1.956million for the upgrading of existing staff quarters across the Central and Western divisions,” Mr Bulitavu said.
He said the funding would allow repairs and upgrades to 33 staff quarters in Vunisea and 26 staff quarters in the Central and Western divisions, following similar upgrades completed for 29 staff quarters in the Northern Division.
“The works will include structural repairs to walls, roofs and foundations, upgrades to electrical, plumbing and sanitation systems, as well as retrofitting to improve the overall safety, resilience and functionality of these government residences.”
He said many government officers worked in challenging conditions in remote and maritime locations and required suitable accommodation.
“Many of our officers are stationed in remote and maritime locations, often separated from their families and working under challenging conditions to ensure essential Government services reach every Fijian.”
Mr Bulitavu said providing safe and modern accommodation would improve staff morale, productivity and retention.
“Ultimately, when we take care of the people who deliver Government services, we strengthen the quality, efficiency and responsiveness of public service delivery, ensuring that rural and maritime communities continue to receive the support and development they rightfully deserve.”
