A $3.4MILLION emergency warehouse that includes quarters for logistics and emergency personnel is currently being built in Vaturekuka, Labasa.

The project aims to significantly strengthen disaster response and relief capabilities across the Northern Division.

The facility is being constructed under a collaborative grant funding arrangement co-funded by the governments of Fiji and New Zealand. Disaster Management Minister Mosese Bulitavu confirmed the financial breakdown of the project during the official groundbreaking ceremony.

“This initiative is a collaborative project under a grant funding arrangement, co-funded by our two governments, with a total investment of $3.4million,” he said.

“The New Zealand government has contributed $2million, while the remaining $1.4million is being provided by the Fiji government.”

Mr Bulitavu said the warehouse would also include a dedicated emergency operations centre, allowing response teams to continue coordinating relief efforts even during severe flooding.

“This forms part of a strategic initiative to address challenges experienced during major flood events, especially when floodwaters cut off access to government offices.”

He said the project would ensure relief supplies remained secure and readily available before disasters occurred, while improving the efficiency of emergency operations.

“It represents an investment in resilience, preparedness, and the protection of lives and livelihoods.”

He said the new facility would strengthen coordination among stakeholders and better equip the Northern Division to respond quickly to communities in the event of future disasters.
