Countless hours of hard work finally paid off for Mahatma Gandhi Memorial High School’s Josefa Nabuka after winning gold in the sub-junior boys 800 metres during the last day of the 2024 Fiji Finals on Saturday.

The Macuata lad recorded a time of 2 minutes and 17.65 seconds for first place.

Nabuka said he had been training for the Fiji Finals since December, and was happy that all his hard work had finally paid off.

“My training goes right back to December, doing 4am road runs and late night training sessions,” he said.

“Since winning gold in the event during the zone, I made a target of winning gold at this competition.”

He dedicated his win to his coach, who had been by his side since he started preparing for the Fiji Finals.

“He believed in me and sacrificed a lot in helping me with my preparation.”

Looking to next year’s finals, Navula has set a new target to break the record in the same event, where he will feature in the junior grade.

“My next goal now is the record next year, and I will start with my preparation straight after this.”
