As predicted by pundits before the start of the 2024 Fiji Finals, the competition may come down to the last few races to decide the winners of this year’s competition.
After day one, no clear favourites could be seen on paper.
Meanwhile, false start is something teams will be looking to cut out in day two of competition.
Several false starts were recorded on day one, including two in the senior boy’s 100m final.
Former Coca-Cola Games sprint champion and senior boy’s 100m record holder Banuve Tabakaucoro says athletes and coaches need to work more on the starts.
“The technical officials and the technology used is totally fine, it’s just the timing of the athletes. The coaches need to spend more time on the starts if we are to reduce to false starts,” he said.
Tabakaucoro, who was a victim himself of false starts during his running days, says the atmosphere and the hype of the Fiji Finals don’t make things any easier for the athletes.
“Imagine being among 30 students throughout the year and then you come and perform in front of thousands of people. It is never going to be easy as I have gone through it and been a victim of it myself.”
The Fiji Finals day two begins with the intermediate boys javelin event at 8.30am.
The first event on the track is the sub-junior girls 200m heat beginning at 9am.
