Suva Grammar School’s Semesa Caginivalu scooped the blue ribbon title for the second consecutive year after winning gold in the senior boys 100-metre event at the Fiji Finals yesterday.
The 19-year-old clocked a time of 10.47 seconds, ending day one of the competition on a high for his school.
His time was 0.04 seconds slower than the record set by Banuve Tabakaucoro in 2011.
“I didn’t expect to win the blue ribbon title because there was a lot of tough competition,” Caginivalu.
The Namosi lad clocked 10.90s during last year’s Fiji Finals.
Meanwhile, Natabua High School’s Isimeli Tuvusa and Ratu Peniasi Ramasirai of Mahatma Gandhi Memorial High School were disqualified from the event following false starts.
“I was even more scared when two of the athletes broke start,” Caginivalu said.
“There was also a lot of pressure especially with the shouts and cheers from the stand.”
He dedicated his win to his parents and grandmother.
“This win is for them.”
