Minister for Education Aseri Radrodro has revealed that 202 teachers registered with the Fiji Teachers Registration Board are yet to be placed in schools across Fiji as of May 25 this year.

In a written response to Opposition MP Premila Kumar in Parliament, Radrodro said the unplaced teachers included Early Childhood Education, primary education, secondary education and in Special Inclusive Education.

“This comprises 128 teachers in Early Childhood Education (ECE), six in Primary Education, 68 in Secondary Education, and two in Special Inclusive Education,” he stated.

The Minister said the largest group of unplaced secondary teachers were degree holders in Literature and Language subjects, including Hindi, Fijian Studies, Geography, Economics and History.

Other unplaced secondary teachers specialised in Mathematics and Physics, Biology and Chemistry, Industrial Arts, Home Economics, Technology and Information Systems, and Physical Education.

Radrodro also outlined the process used to fill vacancies in schools.

“For teacher needs at the school, the Head of School fills in the Teacher Replacement Form and a Recommendation Excel Form which will have a list of qualified teachers in their schools for any vacant position,” he said.

He said District Education Officers then verify and confirm recommended teachers using the Teacher Criteria Guidelines before appointments are finalised by headquarters.
