FIJI’S Attorney General and Minister for Economy Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum announced a $70.4million allocation for the sugar industry in the 2019-2020 national budget, which includes a $30m sugar stabilisation fund.
While delivering the budget in Parliament tonight, he also said an additional $5.9m has been allocated for the purchase of cane trucks and a duty reduction on cane knives.
Mr Sayed-Khaiyum also said the Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission has been requested to regulate cane lorry cartage rates – similar to how it set the $17.50 per tonne rate for mechanical harvesters recently.
