FIJI Women’s Crisis Centre coordinator Shamima Ali says the system is failing survivors of abuse.

Ms Ali said those survivors returned to the centre for support because enforcement responses to cases of violence against women and children were inconsistent.

“Survivors return to us again and again,” she said.

To add salt to the wound, Ms Ali said protection orders were not always enforced, and cases were either delayed or stalled in the justice system.

She emphasised the need to improve response times, expedite court processes, and strengthen child-protection mechanisms.

“Also, there is a need for consistent enforcement of domestic violence restraining orders.”

Ms Alsi said data on the violence against women showed where the gaps were and the areas that need to be improved to address the issue.
