Fiji Airports recently announced a $10million investment to undertake maintenance projects on five of its 13 outer island stations including Labasa, Rotuma, Savusavu, Lakeba, and Matei.
This followed the company’s approval to award FlameTree Development Fiji Pte Ltd for the commencement of this major project.
According to Fiji Airport, this is part of the ongoing maintenance works for all the outer island airports, reflecting the company’s commitment to maintaining government-owned outer island airports.
Fiji Airports chief executive officer Mesake Nawari said the Labasa Airport site will undergo landslip remediation works, in addition to the runway shoulder resealing and fence upgrade works.
“To minimise disruptions, Fiji Airports has planned the project timeline in consultation with stakeholders,” Mr Nawari said in a statement.
“Labasa Airport will experience a partial closure from May 6 to June 16, between 10am to 3pm.”
He said Savusavu Airport would undergo a full closure from June 24 to July 14.
“However, operations at Lakeba and Rotuma airports will continue uninterrupted while Matei Airport in Taveuni will be temporarily closed from September 18 to September 24,” Mr Nawari said, adding that Fiji Airports will continue its dialogue with Government to further enhance facilities at outer island airports and Nausori.
He said scoping exercises for pavement maintenance at other outer island sites will be planned accordingly later in the year.
Mr Nawari stressed the project is separate from the World Bank funded Vanua Levu Tourism Development Project for Labasa, Savusavu and Matei airports which have not commenced and scheduled maintenance work at the five airports are fully funded by Fiji Airports.
Flame Tree Development (Fiji) Pte Ltd director Glenn Wakeman said it was great to see this relationship going with Fiji Airports.
