THE stage is set for another thrilling weekend of golf as the 27th edition of the Vonu Pro-Am tees off at Denarau Golf & Racquet Club tomorrow and Saturday.
Golfers have confirmed their participation in one of Fiji’s premier golf tournaments, with professionals competing for a prize pool of $10,000 while amateurs will battle for prizes worth more than $5000.
Fiji PGA Events controller Rajiv Prasad said the tournament continues to grow each year and remains an important event on the local golfing calendar.
“The Vonu Pro-Am has always attracted quality players and strong support from sponsors and the golfing community. We are looking forward to another exciting tournament this weekend,” Prasad said.
Tee-off on Friday will begin with a 12.30pm shotgun start, while prize-giving is expected around 3pm on Saturday.
In the professional division, defending contenders Tomasi Tuivuna, Roneel Prakash and Zoheer Ahmad are expected to headline the competition and provide a strong challenge for the title.
The ladies division is shaping up to be equally competitive, with Siteri Cash and Tracey Salthouse tipped among the favourites for top honors.
Meanwhile, Rohit Chandra and Asish Chand are expected to lead the charge in the amateur men’s division.
Adding color to the event, all players will receive specially designed tournament polo shirts on Saturday.
Prasad said he was pleased with the continued support behind the tournament.
“We are excited and at the same time very happy with the growth and relationship we have built with Paradise Beverages over the years, and we look forward to many more years of partnership,” Prasad added.
The tournament is an annual event which sees golfers and supporters from various sectors of business converge to witness golf unfold.
With a high number of competitors at last year’s tournament which took place at the Fiji Golf Club in Suva, the numbers have grown this year with 100 golfers taking part, and with the competition shifting to the Western Division, golfers from there have an opportunity to strut their stuff at an elite level for two days.
Participants for the tournament will receive a VONU player pack containing a branded t-shirt, visor, golf ball maker and key tag, all of which could serve as mementos to commemorate their participation in the golf meet in years to come.
This will also be the tournament’s 37th year, an indication of the vital partnerships forged over the years which have strengthened the meet’s longevity as a reputable and formidable platform for golfing excellence to be showcased.
