Zika, climate project launched

A TWO-YEAR project which is focused on understanding how climate change affects the spread of the mosquito-borne Zika virus was launched in Nadi last Friday.

The Fiji Zika Prevalence and Climate Change Study Project 2018-2019 is a joint collaboration between the Health Ministry, University of Fiji and the University of Hamburg.

The study is funded by the German Health Ministry. Speaking at the launch, University of Fiji vice-chancellor Professor Prem Misir thanked the University of Hamburg for the collaboration.

He said prevention was a major part of stopping the spread of disease and more was needed to be done with regards to strengthening the health system.

Prof Misir said global warming played a huge role in spreading mosquito-borne diseases.
