THERE have been concerns over the misuse of the Seaqaqa market in Macuata by youths who use the area for drinking alcohol after hours.

Market vendor Pratibah Kumari said this contributed to damage of the aging facility.

“When we go home, some people come and drink here on the tables. These tables are not meant for sitting; they are for selling,” she said.

Ms Kumari said the wooden structures were not strong enough to withstand people’s weight.

“The wood is already old and not strong. Sometimes, even during the day, when the tables are empty, people sit on them.”

She said vendors often tried to address the situation but were ignored.

“We have raised this numerous times with authorities, but it has fallen on deaf ears.”

She said the problem persisted despite the presence of police officers nearby station.

“The police station is nearby, but they do not seem to notice people sitting here at night.

“They should come and tell them not to sit here because the structures are old.”

She said the market was intended for vendors from all communities to sell their produce and earn a living.

“This place is meant for vendors, not for others to misuse. People of all backgrounds come here to sell.”

She said addressing the issue would help protect the facility and support those who relied on it for their livelihoods.
