UNEMPLOYED youths have been advised to engage to in the tree seedling business in order to help themselves financially.
This was highlighted by forestry officer for the Central Eastern Division Petaia Tuisasaki, who added this initiative would enable youths to assist in Government’s 4Million Trees In 4Years Initiative.
“At the moment, we are trying to target four million trees to be planted in Fiji by 2020 and the private nurseries cannot meet Government’s demand for tree seedlings so youths can help us in this,” Mr Tuisasaki said.
“Imagine if they plant 300 fruit tree seedlings, they can earn around $300 in one harvest because we will buy the seedlings off them for a dollar each and for sandalwood seedlings, it costs five dollars for one.”
He said building a nursery for tree seedlings was an easy task that youths could participate in and the Government would be grateful to provide funding for such projects.
