FOR Ratu Tevita, Isireli, volleyball began as a childhood interest in Kinoya and has now grown into a dream of representing Fiji.
The 14-year-old Year Nine student of Nasinu Secondary School was the most outstanding performer in the Under-17 grade at the Central Eastern Volleyball Championship on Friday, despite competing against older players.
Isireli, started playing volleyball in Year Five when he was just 10 years old.
Growing up in Kinoya, he quickly developed a passion for the sport and continued playing as he grew older.
Six years later, that early interest has developed into a promising sporting journey, with Isireli, now representing Nasinu Secondary School in the U17 grade.
His performance on Friday showed the progress he has made since first picking up a volleyball.
Isireli, is from Nakuruwai in Noco, Rewa, and has maternal links to Raviravi in Matuku, Lau.
While his family roots connect him to different parts of the country, Kinoya is where his love for volleyball began.
At Nasinu Secondary School, Isireli, has the opportunity to develop his skills while competing at a higher level against some of the country’s promising young players.
Being named the most outstanding performer has given him further motivation to continue working on his game.
For Isireli,, however, the recognition is only one step towards a bigger goal.
His ambition is to one day wear the Fiji colours and represent his country in volleyball.
That dream is now giving the young player something to work towards as he continues his development.
From a 10-year-old playing volleyball in Kinoya to becoming an U17 standout, Isireli,’s journey is still in its early stages.
With time on his side, the Nasinu student hopes Friday’s performance will be one of many milestones on his way to achieving his biggest goal — representing Fiji.
