MORE young people are showing interest in owning homes through Government’s rural housing assistance scheme, says Rural and Maritime Development Minister Mosese Bulitavu.
Mr Bulitavu said it was encouraging to see teenagers and people in their early 20s taking steps toward home ownership.
His comments come after two homes were recently given to two brothers at Vatudova in Macuata, aged 18 and 22.
“It is encouraging to see young people owning homes especially teenagers at 18 and 19-year-olds,” he said.
Apart from the two, he said a 21-year-old in Bua had also benefited from the program, showing that more young people were starting to think seriously about securing a home at an early age.
“This shows a growing sense of responsibility among younger people. It also shows that people are becoming more mature in trying to own a house first.”
Mr Bulitavu said owning a home early in life could help young people build a more secure future and avoid financial difficulties later on.
“Some people retire at 55 and still do not own a home. If these young people can do it, then the rest of us should also do our part.”
The ministry, he said, would continue supporting rural communities through its housing schemes, which aim to help families and individuals who may struggle to build homes on their own.
Mr Bulitavu said the growing interest among young people was a positive sign for the future of home ownership in rural Fiji.
