Braelynn Yee, a representative of Fiji Athletics, has recently been awarded the prestigious Griffith University Oceania Australia Foundation Athletics Business Scholarship.
This scholarship provides her with the opportunity to pursue a Bachelor of Business degree while training with top athletes and coaches in the Oceania region.
Yee, who was previously a member of the Laucala Bay Athletics Club, has represented Fiji in various international events, including the 2017 and 2019 Oceania Area Championships, the 2017 Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games, 2021 Pacific Mini Games, and the 2019 and 2023 Pacific Games.
She has demonstrated exceptional talent and dedication to her sport, and her hard work has now been recognised through this scholarship.
Albert Miller, the Athletics Fiji national coach, believes Yee has not reached her full potential yet as an athlete and has high hopes for her future in the sport.
“I believe that she can run below 12 seconds in the 100m and under 25 seconds in the 200m, she just needs a whole year of solid training and competition without any injury, and she should be able to achieve the above times,” Miller said.
“The scholarship is a golden opportunity for Braelynn to further her education and athletic career, and it serves as a shining example for other athletes in Fiji.”
Miller also says there are other Fijian athletes, who are currently pursuing athletic scholarships in the USA, highlighting the abundance of opportunities available for athletes.
“Besides Braelyn, we also have another four athletes (Waisele Inoke, Kaiava Francis, Vilorina Naibena and Joana Vakasobuduru from Sigatoka) who are currently in the USA on athletics scholarships.
“There are many opportunities for scholarships for athletes in the sport of athletics, but it’s up to the coaches and athletes to be on the lookout when the opportunities are presented.”
