XAVIER College’s Under-19 girls futsal team etched their name into history with a 6-2 win over Swami Vivekananda College in a thrilling Fiji Secondary Schools Futsal Championship U19 Girls final at the FMF Gymnasium in Suva yesterday.
Head coach Asish Chand says the mission was clear from the outset.
“This is what every team comes here for,” Mr Chand said.
“We came with only one focus, one goal—to win this tournament. And for that, I thank the girls.”
Chand shares the team’s focus was evident throughout the competition.
From the opening match to the final, the girls displayed discipline and composure. According to Chand, it was their mindset that made the difference.
“They were focused, they were committed, and they believed in themselves. That’s how they were able to achieve what they have done.”
With the U19 futsal tournament only introduced last year and Xavier College’s absent from that inaugural edition, this year marked both their debut and their triumph.
“To be here this year and to win it, it’s a big achievement,” Mr. Chand reflected.
Facing a strong Swami Vivekananda College side, the girls from Xavier College found themselves in a tightly contested first half where momentum shifted constantly.
“The message to the girls was that the game wasn’t over,” Mr Chand explained. “We played until the last whistle, and I believe that helped.”
The Ba girls clawed their way back into the match, turning pressure into opportunity and ultimately sealing a memorable win.
Team captain Salaseini Ratu says her gratitude to her teammates.
“I thank the girls for the win. It is because of their hardwork and commitment that made us win,” Ratu said.
As the team takes the win to Ba, the victory stands as a proud moment for the school, Ba community, parents and fans.
