WE have people who are pretending to be sick but are not really sick.

Shangri-La Yanuca Island Fiji Resort general manager Francis Lee made the remark to the Standing Committee on Economic Affairs during a consultation on the Work Care Bill and Accident Compensation (Amendment) Bill in Nadroga yesterday.

“And on negligence, how do we deal with it?” Mr Lee said.

In response, committee chairperson Sakiusa Tubuna said under the bill, there was a provision on self-harm injury because of negligence.

“So, we’ll try to review the provisions so that it is strengthened,” Mr Tubuna said.

“To ensure we have people practicing good OHS practice.

“Under the bill those that are negligent or not following the proper practices, they are not eligible for any compensation.

“We are also mindful of the importance of employers too, that they need to be protected also under the bill.

“What we are proposing is that there is a need for a thorough analysis. If the Ministry of Employment is looking at the efficiency in the bill, perhaps we can put some figures to that. “How it will enhance efficiency while we forget productivity. At the end of the day, we need to ensure productivity is also enhanced through the bill,” he said.
