Work on $5.84 million market to end in April

WORK on the $5.84 million Vaileka Municipal Market in Rakiraki is expected to be completed in April.

Rakiraki Town Council CEO Rakesh Chandra said work at the market was going well.

He said work had to be postponed a couple of weeks ago because of rainy conditions.

“I can’t give an exact date but we hope to complete the construction work by April,” he said.

The project is a combined effort between the Fijian and Australian Governments.

The Australian Government through the UN Women’s Market for Change program gave a total funding of $3.2million.

Vaileka Market Association president Varanisese Maisamoa said the vendors were excited to move into the new complex.

“We know that it will be a proper shelter for us and we will be able to set up our stalls in a comfortable space away from the rain and sun,” she said.
