Some women, including a university student have taken the lead in providing for themselves and their families by cutting cane in Tavua.
They live at Lololevu No.2 settlement and have taken an independent approach to earning a living in these trying times.
Alesi Matecava, who is a first-year hospitality and management student at the Fiji National University, resigned from the Tavua Hotel as COVID-19 impacted the tourism industry.
“The pandemic slowed down the business and I had asked my aunt that I would like to join them in harvesting sugar cane as well,” she said.
“This is the first time I have cut sugar cane and this will earn me some extra dollars rather than staying at home.”
