Reapi Nai took part in a national Fiji Day celebration for the first time yesterday.

The 72-year-old had travelled to Lautoka from Naviti, Yasawa, a fortnight ago and made a special effort to be at Churchill Park to mark Fiji’s 52nd Independence Day celebration.

She said she was honoured to have witnessed President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere in person officiating at the event.

Growing up, Ms Nai said her only glimpse of Fiji Day national celebrations was gleaned from what she heard over the radio.

“I’m glad I am here today to see for myself this national celebration, this is my first time,” the septuagenarian said. “I could not make it to the pavilion because it was full, but I managed to get myself a spot just beside the ground to see the main parade.

“This is a story I will take back with me when I return to Malevu in the next few weeks.”

Hundreds of Fijians made use of the free transport and free tuna and egg sandwich lunch provided by the Government for those who turned up to be part of the celebrations.
